Do any of you practice any sort of martial art? I have been trying to get back into shape lately and have always wanted to learn a martial art. I almost started to learn Cuong Nhu last year, as my roomate was a member of a Dojo that met in our college's gym, but I never got around to it. I've been looking at doing Muy Thai or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Any suggestions?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is good but maybe consider finding a place where your teacher has mastered many styles and teaches them in unison. also its important to find a place where they do real sparring with single one on one or multiple attackers. there are many places i have checked out that have almost no sparring which makes no sense to me. i used to be in shape before some health problems 4 years ago that almost killed me. one thing i am considering to try and get back in shape again (atm i get winded from walking up stairs its pathetic) is starting martial arts again. whatever you do though, make sure you dont go to a place where there are 12 year old kids that are as round as they are tall with blackbelts. lol

Yea I use to do Tae Kwon Do, was one of the best at the dojo I went too, when it came to open hand combat and kicking people.. xD
Its alot of fun, I quit awhile back though due to a accident that involved a fight between me and a black belt.
But none the less, if you can keep control of your anger then its alot of fun dude.

From my understanding, Jiu-Jitsu is more about ground fighting, is that right?

Yes, it focuses a lot on ground combat, thows/takedowns and some arm bars here and there. It's very good for ground combat oriented fighters. A great deal of my military training was in Jiu-Jitsu.
I took TKD before I enlisted. It's okay but it is woefully weak against ground combat disciplines.

I heard that Muy Thai and Jiu-Jitsu is a great combo because Muy Thai is a great striking-oriented martial art while Jiu-Jitsu is the strongest of the ground combat forms.

I couldn't say really.
but Sindorin, even though I have to agree with you abit about how TKD is pretty weak when it comes to ground combat considering you don't see it happen often in the art. I've seen TKD martial artists that used ground combat techniques while sparring in TKD, and its pretty strong.
Just usually never worked when fighting me..or when I would attempt to use it.
I would have to say TKD is "alittle bit of everything" from my experiences.
pretty much Mandalore, if your looking for more specific types of fighting styles (which it sounds like you are) don't go with TKD.

Doesn't change the fact that they totally own in combat.

Not really. Hamas and Hizbollah do a pretty good job against them, since they have continually failed to extinguish them. As far as technology for a state their size, they are on par with European nations. If a major military power came, they'd get their asses beat.

Guerrillas always can evade and annoy a larger power. It doesn't mean that power is any less powerful.

Hamas and Hizbollah are using professional military equipment similar to guided missiles and V2 rockets. They also routinely used russian built Kornet Anti Tank missiles and have been known to destroy Israeli tanks on a regular basis. These insurgents are far more advanced than your average Haji found in Iraq, which are a dime a dozen. No, Hizbollah is expressly equipped and trained by Iran.
They've also taken out Israeli ships or damaged them with the Chinese built Silkworm.

Israelis'd own them in hand-to-hand combat with Krav Maga.

This is a prime example of complete rape.
Israel vs Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and a whole bunch of their allies.
who wins?
Israel!
call me crazy, but that is the pinnacle of awesomeness when it comes to war.
I also like Israel, cause everyone hates them lol.
they are warmongers, they are "the sparta" of this era in my opinion.
Also Sindorin, its true that they might ultimately lose a war against a superpower, but hell..they'd take as many with them as they possibly can. lol
They'd probably nuke all the middle east and then some lol!
then they'd get nuked by the superpower or they'd be invaded, which then they'd butcher even more enemies.
When Israelis fight, they fight like no other!
they have no mercy!! lol

Israel has better tech than it's neighbors, thanks to the United States. While many of the opponents in that war had soviet technology that was dated (mainly shitty T55/54's) while Israel had better equipment.

Aikido is a style where you're trying to prevent any injury to your opponent. Good for Police Officers.

I had 3 sensei's in college for Aikido, Karate, and Kendo simultaneously. It was a pretty sweet setup, and I got into pretty damn good shape. I sparred/wrestled a lot with a friend who studied Krav Maga. It's good stuff. Learned a lot from our bouts. I was also on UF's fencing team (european saber), and back then, I was an intermediate gymnast.
This is partially why it took me 8 years to get my bachelor's.
I am currently sensei-less. :(

I was doing some research and I found a MMA Dojo that teaches BJJ, Tae Kwon Do, and Muy Thai all together in my city. I will definitely check into it come summer.

Heh I was a martial artist addict myself. Ever since I was a kid I've been doing one form or the other of MA. Started with Karate when I was about 6, then did some Jyu Jitsu (good stuff), did some Kendo (very good for discipline) and Capoeira which I consider a form of MA.
Out of all the striking arts I consider Karate to be one of the most interesting (you conserve alot of energy.) while Tae Kwon Do has you using your leg power for strong strikes.
I like Capoeira the best cause it focuses alot on agility and tricks. I need to get back into shape though, a few of the threads on this board made me realise this.

TKD's main emphasis is on both striking power and the sheer speed of attacks. It is designed to overwhelm your opponent with a quick succession of strikes that is aimed at incapacitating him. It is not really ideal of sustained combat against someone trained in close combat like BJJ or Muy Thai.

I practiced Karate for quite a long time about 8 years specifically SHudokan karate. In the military we do Gracie jujitsu. I liked that combination because karate is all about staying on your feet. While jujitsu is all ground fighting. I have never taken Akido but been interested.
I am out of practice for karate have not been active in it for last couple years.
