So we started our swordfights again for the year. If you've seen the movies Sasquatch Gang or Rolemodels thats kinda what I'm talking about. Except our particular group is more into the fact that we can bludgeon people with sticks in the middle of the park.
All in all it's a very demanding "sport" and after I nearly collapsed yesterday I came to the conclusion that cigarettes are BAD. I have had only 4 today, usually I smoke about 15-20 a day, for the last 6 or so years. This is why I'm sitting here rambling instead of going to the store and buying some death.
I think I might add alchohol to the list and see what happens if I clean Myself up for awhile. ;)

Smokes AND Alcohol ... taking a lot on at one time ... quiting smoking is so much easier when you're drunk, I hear. ::grins::
Seriously, though, good luck with that. I used to do the boffer thing myself and you're right, it's one demanding sport. (my college has a club for it, but I'm too broken to do it these days)

I wish you luck in your journey to quit smoking. I really hope that you succeed, vod.
As for the fighting ring, I participated in one in middle school, and got pretty far into it. I was given a gauntlet and a dagger for one round, while the other kid had a greatsword. He swung a power sweep at me and missed, and I jumped in and hit him in the chest and the neck, killing him.
I got up and cheered, and the kid got up and beat me over the head. He ended up winning. Never turn your back on an enemy....

Just smoking a few a day is the easiest. Going cold turkey is hard as hell. I wish you luck in quiting ner'vod. I managed to once but ended up going back to it. If you discover a secret to it let me know lol

Please correct me if I am wrong.....
So a group of mutual minded people get together and make weapons (foam)
Depending on the fighting style that you want, you make different weapons, i.e. shortsword, two hanger, mace, morning star, daggers, shield
Then, they set up a date and meeting place and get in a ring. Two people step forward and duke it out.
The way I played it, it was king of the hill, where the winner stayed in until he was slain, but he was given upgrades every time he/she won. I managed to get two daggers (I had one to start with) and a soromon gauntlet and helmet.
You can do armor and stuff too, but they have restrictions where you have to attend a certain number of battles and win a certain number in order to use it.

You're version was a little more organized than ours ... we just carried our foam/pipe swords in the trunk of a car and pulled them out whenever we had free time to go at it. Usually we did it during lunch periods or after play rehearsals, or whenever we were bored.
For a year or so a friend and I used to train and spar every couple days for at least an hour, whatever the weather. Great times, those.

I have always wanted to spar. I tried to do it with my bro and his nerf swords, but he is terrible. He would end up getting hit then crying. yeah... I might be a lot older than my brother....

Your fighting ring we call a Bear Pit. And we don't use any upgrade system, you fight with what you have. Normally thats just warmup or cool down. We play huge CTF games. This week we had a solid 30 people probably closer to 40 or 50.
We also Have field battles, which are just 2 charging lines. And Clan battles which are semi-random teams of 3-5 and complete chaos. We're pretty damn organized but we've been at it for like 5 years.
Seriously tho if the Zombies attacked right now I bet I would die. CARDIO, isn't that rule #1?

You should keep an eye out for groups, check hobbyshops and the like if you can't get involved with a dojo - post a note to say you're looking or whatnot.
Me, I was a terror with two swords, and an artist with a rapier.

This boffering business looks like good fun. Good thing pool season is around the corner, I might be able to pick up supplies to make some swords.

I recommend looking for a group in your area. There are plenty of organizations that are into that sort of thing like the SCA or NERO. If you're a college student, see if your campus has a club for it. If you can't find one, get a group of friends together and build some (http://www.thealmightyguru.com/Boffer/Boffer-Generic.html) yourself. Their pretty cheap. It costs about 5 bucks for two swords depending on how big you make 'em (Two dollars for 10' of PVC and three dollars for 5' of foam).
So Elis, how goes the quittin'?
