During Electronic Arts' fiscal year 2010 update call today, CEO John Riccitiello cited Star Wars: The Old Republic as a key driver of the company's digital business, noting that the MMO was making "great progress towards a spring 2011 launch."

Spring 2011? Crap man. I was REALLY hoping for 2010 at least.

I hate this but I'm glad at the same time. The game will have more time to be better.

You never know, they could be just playing it safe with a distant release date that might change the closer they get to finishing it. The longer they take the better because it will prove to be polished off the start and have better everything.

EA has released false information, according to BioWare, on the game before. I'm sure most of you remember EA saying SWTOR would be micro-transaction based.

Maybe we'll see results for beta?

When I was first introduced to the game last year I estimated a 2011 release. Just goes to show that Bioware has more in store for us.

I am also sad but glad. I may be at basic training mid-late 2010 so 2011 i might actually be able to play and not be waaaay behind everybody.

Technically spring 2011 of their fiscal year is spring 2010 of the normal year, but it's hard to say if that's what he meant (and most people seem to discount that possibility). However, saying they don't expect income in the 2011 fiscal year (which ends in March 2011) I think points to a spring 2010 release. Maybe I'm overthinking it, though.

The only thing that I can think of that would point towards them actually referring to Spring 2010 of the caldendar year ( their fiscal year ) would be the fact that they mentioned something about not wanting to be at two E3's.

If they're making "great progress towards a spring 2011 launch", they probably wouldn't have said that. And if they did plan for a 2011 release (calendar year) they probably wouldn't have said that they didn't expect any revenue in fiscal 2011, because that's before the release so of course they wouldn't expect revenue yet.

Not so much true, they said it had not been announced, rather then there was no MT

And not really surprising, thread is still going, looking more and more likely

From IGN:

""On the digital side, while we've got a great number of incredible initiatives, one key driver is going to be the launch date of our major MMO," Riccitiello said.

"As it stands today, the game is making great progress towards a spring 2011 launch. But given the volatility of this particular sector, and the fact that we haven't yet provided a specific launch date, we will be excluding the revenue from our fiscal 2011 guidance plans."

Until now, BioWare and Electronic Arts have been quiet on the release date. Signups for the beta began this past September.

Riccitiello did not specify if he was referring to calendar 2011, or the company's fiscal 2011, which rangers from April 2010 through March 2011. We contacted both BioWare and Electronic Arts for additional comments and will update this story as we get new information.

Update: Bioware told IGN that they have no further comments to add to Riccitiello's statement, and would not confirm if he was indeed referring to Star Wars: The Old Republic."

i'm not convinced for that announcement 2011 seems to far removed especially with the new WOW expansion and the star trek MMO.

Well, here's the official response (http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=109426).

"While we have not announced a specific date, we can confirm that we are targeting a spring 2011 release for Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. We’ve got a lot of exciting updates and reveals planned throughout 2010, including the first-ever hands-on testing for the game."

It seems odd that they decided to announce the game around 2.5 years before its release.

Guess it's official then. Oh well, we can find plenty to do in the time we're waiting. If we keep building on what we have now, which is already a very solid base, we'll already be a powerhouse going into the game.

(insert ultra sad face here)

I'll probably be out of basic training by then though, so I guess its in my favor.

oh god that's mean I have a 1.5 year of reading over hashed topic in the official forum..... i'm not going to last that long.... they should really have stayed quiet and not even do a post like that....... stupid EA i was better off not knowing.

I have to agree with you here actually. I think there would have been less mass bitching from the tor community if it would have just been left alone. It was different before there was a general date.

Overall it probably would have been better if they would have waited.

I think they did the post because they were getting a lot of questions about what they meant (not just from the forums - also from sites like IGN). Had they not responded they still would have had a lot of people asking what was meant with that statement.

I wasnt suggesting Bioware to not respond, just to not make an announcement on the release date at all yet.

I was hoping for maybe a fall 2010 release, but I guess the more time they have to work on it, the better it will be.
