For those of you who play, I've found the most effective seige method for myself.
Size: Ultra
Faction: Ottoman empire
Time period: Late
Rules: No mortars, no calvary.
Units: 8 line infantry, 4 hand mortars (Grenadiers with 80 range but slower rate of fire) , 2 24 lber howitzers, 6 64pounder siege cannons.
First I set the 64 pounders at the front of my line, and keep them on round shot, then put the 2 units of Howitzers behind them enough to shoot over, and set them to quicklime shot. I put the 8 units of infantry behind the howitzers, each regiment around 3 rows thick. The hand mortars are spread out in a very thin line to cover the whole area behind the line infantry.
When the game starts I open up on the walls with the 64 lbers, and knock down as much as I can. The Howitzers are set to fire at the areas with the highest concentration of enemy troops. When you feel like you have pounded them enough, move the line infantry in. You should keep them in the strait line, and move up the hand mortars behind them. The line infantry will act as human shield to the hand mortars, and will absorb most, if not all of the fire. While the line infantry are drawing the fire, move the hand mortars within range, and have them launch grenades onto the walls to wipe out the bulk of the enemy forces there.
Once you feel you have done enough, move in the line infantry to take the walls and destroy whats left of the defenders on the section that you chose to assault. Once your on the wall, have them man the battlements and unlock the gate for the rest of your line infantry to storm in. I would recommend having at least 4 units on the walls so they can deal with any units that won't come down to meet the men going through the gates... if there are any left after the Howitzers have had their fill.
If any large meele fights happen to form, don't be afraid to shoot your howitzers into the mix if you have the troops to spare, because if outnumbered Ottoman infantry probably won't win the fight. If your looking for another method to break up these "knots" than you may want to use the hand mortars, they wreak havoc on knots of infantry.
I tried this in an unranked multiplayer match against a mediocre player. I posted the screenshot results on Xfire, but I'll post it here also.
Me: Deployed: 1720, Losses: 342, Enemy killed: 383,
Opponent: Deployed: 2112, Losses: 1415, Enemy killed: 235.
I did not even have a chance to mount the walls, my howitzers took out the majority of them, which explains my low kill rate (the quicklime mist does not count as a kill for you). What was left charged out and engaged my line infantry in meele. I shot my hand mortars into them and wiped them out in a few minutes.
Hope this helps, this is to date my best fort taking method. The only one that has come close is a full army of swordsmen with maxed out XP.
