Wooh.. "They will steal your starship if you're not careful"! Too bad it's not 100% proof we will have them, he might be just describing the place.
Another thing, see Ord Mantell?! It looks freaking huge! Even the place inside the mountain is gigantic. I don't think the planets will be too small :)

Awesome video! All the planets look big, which is good. That's not quite confirmation of starships, but it's pretty close.

I'm going to be optimistic and take that as a hint they will have starships, but at the same time it could just be that they are trying to capture a feeling.

Yeah, I'm worried about that too. However, there are starships in concept art, and it is Star Wars.

after seeing that video i have lost hope of seeing open world stuff and i have a feeling it's going to be somewhar linear like the kotor games :(

I hope it's big enough that the immersion is still there. I feel a bit like Gilamar. It seems we'll evolve in big ass corridors :(
And I don't think that the comment "stealing your ship" was a hint at player ships, but like a vod said, more a description of the feeling in the area :(

It was a good video documentary. I am a little concerned with the corridor feeling as well but I love what i saw of the atmosphere of the planets.

What do you mean by corridor?
Gilamar

like how the kotor games played, something like that won't work in an mmo that was ment to be immersive

You mean like 'point a' to 'point b' style? Instead of 'point a' to 'point b' OR 'point b to point a'?
I think it would work the first way better. This is still KotOR even though they left out the "Knights of..." part.

They're probably refering to how there were mountains to determine where you can and can't go.

Ah I see. I wonder how difficult it is to alter the terrain once the game is launched. For example, perhaps an area where a bridge collapse that determines the player can't travel beyond this area. Then later on through a storyline of some sort, the bridge is repaired and a new location is open to exploration.

In my opinion what I'm hoping is that it differs between planets. Some planets do better with a linear map, while at the same time other planets would be better with a map where you can go almost anywhere. Its kind of comparing Naboo to Mustafar. Naboo should be very open while Mustafar should be somewhat limited due to all the lava and generally hostile enviorment.

Yeah, that's one relatively easy way to keep players out of an area until the devs make an update adding it.

You have a point. What about Coruscant (if it's included)? It has similarities with both.

Maybe Coruscant could have mix of zones, kind of like instancing I guess. Haven't really put much thought into it yet.

Coruscant should be entirely instanced the same way Nar Shadaa was in II.

That could work well.

I really like the idea of having bridges and such cut off. In Coruscant they could have ship crashes and construction sites :P
One thing I really hope they don't do is make the outside model of a building and such, ten times smaller than the inside model (the instanced one). For example in WoW, Naxxramas. It's tiny outside, and inside it's huge.
Also, I wouldn't mind having an area split up in many parts, and instanced inbetween. As long as the individual parts are wide enough, for example it takes ten minutes to run across, you don't have to change instance that often.
Another thing I hope they don't implement is AoC's "heroic mode". For those unfamiliar, in AoC you can select to either play a area normally, or do it in heroic mode where you'll need a full group to manage the mobs, but the loot is greater.

Interesting ideas. I'd rather have no instancing, but if it's limited like that, ok. City of Heroes was very heavily instanced and it got really annoying.
Also, it's annoying when buildings are smaller than their interiors.

Yeah one of the major problems with using a lot of instancing is that if the game has memory leak problems, your screwed.

To me when the guy talked about ships getting stolen, it sounded like more of an example of how desperate people on this planet are, not that they would actually steal your ship.

Indeed, that's why the areas have to be large. Funcoms reason why they couldn't make it open like World of Warcraft, was that it would require way too much computer power. But if you've ever played it, you know how large for example Lacheish Plains are, so I doubt adding another one like that besides it, and have you load inbetween would be a problem, aslong as they don't make quests that have you walk back and forth across the line for a long time.
If you end up with a instanced game, you just can't get away from that loading, it just may be on one spot/gateway instead of the whole border. And often you go past alot of unreachable map when going from one instance to another.

I got that vibe too, but if they're going to release a smuggling class, shouldn't those characters at least be eligible for owning a ship? A ship is kind of essential to the life of a smuggler.

If they releases a smuggler class, I'm sure there will be ships, because without a ship a smuggler is nothing. However, they might not make smugglers playable.
